Community Involvement
For the Northern Arizona Building Association, NABA, building means more than providing quality houses, it means being involved in community projects, taking care of the environment, participating in community events and partnering with civic groups to improve the lifestyle of the area’s residents. NABA members and staff are involved in their communities year round. Some example of events include:
CanBuild Food Drive Extending our community outreach efforts, this event began in 2006 to benefit needy area residents through competition between the area high schools, the project adds a design/build component to a traditional food drive. Non-perishable food items are collected and used to construct a display or design by participating high schools. Prizes are awarded for best display, most food collected and participation. Event sponsorships are available for the 2008 event, which occurs in October/November.
Real Jobs, Great Trades The NABA Foundation launched the “Real Jobs, Great Trades” program in October of 2001. NABA members teamed up with NAU Construction students in presentations at area high schools and two middle schools. Presenters encourage students to consider the professional, financial and community rewards of construction careers.
YouthBuild Partnership NABA is a sponsor the Coconino County YouthBuild program, which provides job training and educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth. Over a two year period, students ages 17-24 will receive education and job training while constructing or repairing housing for low income families in their own neighborhood. Participants will split their time between the construction site and the classroom, where they will earn their GED or high school diploma or an Alternative Energy Technical Certificate from the Community College.
YouthBuild and NABA have teamed up to create a NABA / YouthBuild float entry in Flagstaff’s 4th of July parade. YouthBuild students compete in a contest for the float design. The chosen design is built by YouthBuild students and NABA member builders.
Scholarships The NABA Foundation, through its two annual golf tournaments, funds scholarships for members’ children to the Construction Management School at Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College. The Dan Furr Memorial Scholarship funds the tuition of members’ children for tuition to any post-secondary educational institution in Arizona.
